Foam & Sponge Rubber Strip Functions

Expanded rubber — solid rubber treated with a foaming process to trap air bubbles inside its cellular structure — is widely known as foam or sponge rubber. Supplied in strips or coils, it delivers multiple functions:

  • Gap filling and void filling
  • Air and water sealing
  • Draught and dust prevention
  • Cushioning and shock absorption
  • Thermal insulation
  • Noise reduction and acoustic insulation
  • Water filtration
  • Packaging protection

Sponge strips can be cut to any custom length. Foam strips and coils feature either an open-cell or closed-cell structure. Open-cell types are designed for water and air filtration and sound absorption; closed-cell variants offer thermal insulation and resist water absorption. Self-adhesive backing can be added to any foam strip upon request.

Available forms include square profiles, sheets, rolls, strips and coils. Peel-off adhesive backing simplifies sealing and bonding work and serves as temporary fixing during clamping. Foam strips or rubber strips fitted with adhesive backing are commonly called foam tape or rubber tape.

Weather Resistance & Typical Applications

Our foam and rubber sealing tapes are made of diffusion-open material. They feature outstanding resistance to wind, weather and UV radiation, and reduce the risk of rot and mould growth on adjacent building materials. This high-quality sealing tape is eco-friendly both during production and in service.

Typical Applications
  • Sealing gaps between window/door frames and masonry
  • Joint sealing between concrete slabs
  • Sealing between sills and reveals
  • Sealing for double casement windows, skylights and roof lights
  • Roof structure sealing
  • Vibration and noise insulation for ventilation and HVAC systems
  • Noise and vibration damping for caravans and park homes
  • Insulation for window installation

Compared with solid rubber strips, foam strips have compressibility, which helps form tight air and water seals between mating surfaces. Under compression, foam strips can compress down to roughly half their original thickness; exact performance depends on foam density and applied load. Foam strips are widely used in glazing and construction industries, relying on compression to achieve reliable sealing, and also perform well for thermal and acoustic management.

Specialist foam strip grades are available for medical, food contact, fire-retardant, LSOH, water-resistant, UL94 V-0 and chemical-resistant applications. Contact our sales engineers to select the most suitable grade for your project.

Expanding Foam Tape for Timber Window Frames

Expanding foam tape is a construction-grade product made of pre-compressed open-cell PU foam strip. During installation, it expands gradually to fill gaps evenly around timber window frames. It permits controlled fresh air circulation while repelling rainwater and driving rain, effectively preventing dry rot.

Expanding foam tape can expand up to 5 times its compressed thickness. It is a pre-compressed sealant based on impregnated, permanently elastic fine-cell PU foam that expands slowly and uniformly to block wind, heavy rain, draughts, dust and gaps. It works perfectly for uneven surfaces, expanding to fill irregular gaps. Rolls come with self-adhesive backing, available in widths from 10 mm to 1000 mm and thicknesses of 3 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 10 mm and more.

EPDM Foam vs. Neoprene Foam — Material Comparison

Both closed-cell EPDM foam and closed-cell neoprene foam look similar, and both are widely used for gaskets and sealing strips across many industries. EPDM foam strips excel in water resistance and outdoor weathering. Neoprene foam also performs well in these areas, with extra resistance to oils, petroleum products and many chemicals. Both are cost-effective sealing materials; neoprene foam is generally priced slightly higher than EPDM foam. Both offer excellent value and long ageing performance and will not turn brittle over time.

Expanded Closed-Cell Neoprene Sponge / Foam Strip

Neoprene foam is one of our most widely supplied closed-cell foamed materials for foam strip production. As a general-purpose material, neoprene foam strip features great weather resistance. Thanks to its excellent airtight and watertight performance, expanded neoprene foam is commonly used in automotive, electronics and construction sectors. It works perfectly for expansion joints, weather seals, glazing seals, closure seals, shock pads and cushioning components, and is also popular in classic car and marine applications.

Neoprene foam strip (also called neoprene sponge strip or coil) delivers reliable thermal insulation, for example on garage door seals. It operates steadily across a temperature range of -20°C to +90°C, suitable for numerous indoor and outdoor sealing projects. Neoprene is the trade name for DuPont polychloroprene; after foaming and expansion, it can conform to uneven surfaces in construction. Its closed-cell structure fills gaps effectively and blocks air and water penetration.

Closed-cell neoprene foam boasts outstanding ageing resistance, so the seal will not fail after long-term exposure. It is the preferred choice for applications that require blocking oil, grease or heat transfer between mating surfaces. Neoprene sponge sealing strips are highly durable. With good compressibility, the material can be pressed to fit irregular gaps and vents to stop air and water ingress. Premium fire-retardant neoprene sponge strips with Class O approval are also available.

Neoprene sponge products are available as cut strips, sheets or rolls — including neoprene foam sheets, neoprene sponge sheets, neoprene sponge rolls and neoprene foam rolls.

Expanded Closed-Cell EPDM Sponge / Foam Strip

EPDM foam is another mainstream material for our foam strips. EPDM foam strip is selected primarily for superior water resistance and is widely used in roofing, weather sealing, window sealing and other scenarios where ozone and weather resistance are critical.

Standard EPDM Thickness Options 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm
Standard Medium-Density Working Range -30°C to +120°C
High-Temperature Grade Continuous use up to 128°C
Density Options Low, medium and high density; semi-open-cell versions on request

With reliable airtight and watertight properties, EPDM foam strips and coils are widely adopted in automotive, electronics and construction industries. They are suitable for expansion joints, weather seals, glazing seals, closure seals, shock absorption and cushioning. Closed-cell EPDM sponge is also used for mouse pads, lighting sealing strips and general vibration damping parts in environments free of aggressive liquids. EPDM foam and sponge can be supplied in sheet or roll form.

Additional Closed-Cell Foam Strip Materials
Silicone Sponge Strip

Silicone sponge strips feature excellent sealing performance, low compression set, and strong resistance to ozone, UV and flame. This premium material is engineered for demanding high-temperature applications, with a working range of -40°C to +200°C. Typical uses include ovens, cookers and light lens gaskets. Grey and white are standard colours; custom colour matching is available for bulk orders with a smooth skin finish.

Fire-retardant, low-smoke and low-toxicity silicone strips are produced for special projects, mainly supplied to London Underground to restrict flame spread. This grade meets gas, smoke and fire safety standards: it is self-extinguishing and releases no harmful fumes when ignited. It withstands -60°C to +250°C and complies fully with UL94 V-0, making it ideal for public safety-critical high-temperature sealing. Silicone foam can also be supplied as sheets or rolls.

Nitrile/PVC Blend Strip

Our nitrile/PVC blend strip works between -40°C and +140°C. Its closed-cell structure blocks air and water, suitable for watertight and airtight sealing under elevated temperatures. It features great heat absorption, good resistance to oil, most acids, UV and weathering, and holds a Class O fire rating. Nitrile/PVC foam is relatively soft, perfect for cushioning and lagging, though it has moderate compression set performance.

PVC Foam Strip

PVC foam sealing strip offers reliable water sealing and UV protection. It is traditionally popular in the glazing industry and fits many other sealing applications.

Polyethylene Foam Strip

Cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foam strip is impermeable to air and water. It is lightweight and cost-effective, with high rigidity and tear strength. It provides good thermal insulation and stable mechanical properties, available in various densities and colours with a smooth skin surface. PE foam sheets are commonly used for swimming pool and garden pond covers. Depending on grade, the working temperature spans -40°C to +90°C. PE foam products are offered in multiple densities including LD18, LD33, LD45 and LD67, supplied as sheets, rolls or custom cut parts.

Additional Open-Cell Foam Strip Materials
Polyurethane Foam Strip

Polyurethane (PU) foam strips feature an open-cell structure, ideal for liquid absorption, air and water filtration, and acoustic insulation. Lightweight, cost-effective and flexible, PU foam works well for packaging to cushion and dampen vibration. It performs reliably within a temperature range of -40°C to +100°C, available in grey and white.

Acoustic Foam Strip

Acoustic foam strips use an open-cell construction that makes them perfect for sound absorption. Acoustic foam can also be supplied as sheets or rolls and is widely used for acoustic treatment and noise reduction. The open-cell structure raises air resistance to attenuate airborne sound waves and reduce wave amplitude; sound energy is converted and dissipated into heat.

Pre-Compressed Expanding Foam Tape

This is an open-cell polyurethane foam impregnated with modified acrylic dispersion. It contains no plasticisers and is formulated with flame-retardant additives. One side is coated with high-strength acrylic self-adhesive. Open-cell PU foam tape impregnated with neoprene is also supplied, generally referred to as expanding polyurethane foam tape. The tape can expand to 4–5 times its original thickness, making it the top choice for timber window frame sealing.

Heat-Resistant Strip Materials

High-temperature EPDM foam strip is also manufactured by our company. Where applications require a specific heat resistance in excess of the standard, we can offer a strip product that exceeds normal foam properties. Operating temperatures reach 121°C.
